It’s Wildfire Preparedness Month, which lasts throughout the month of May. As many of us know, the last few years our state has experienced devastating wildfires that have resulted in incomprehensible loss.

Did you know? 20 of Colorado’s largest wildfires have occurred within the last 20 years. 4 out of the 5 largest fires in state history have occurred within the last 3 years and the most destructive fire happened just 5 months ago.

With the more frequent, warmer temperatures, drought, and continued development in the wildland-urban interface, Carbondale Fire District has made wildfire mitigation a top priority.

Simple Steps You Can Take Today to Prepare for Wildfire Threats

We encourage anyone living in a place with high risk for wildfire to do follow these steps:

1. Sign up for your local alerts. For Garfield County you can sign up here and for Pitkin County you can sign up here.
2. Make a Plan! We encourage you to make an emergency plan for you and your family and to ensure that everyone is comfortable and confident executing it. Complete your emergency checklist by first determining your evacuation route and having an emergency supply kit prepared. We follow the 6 P’s when creating our emergency kit:
   1. People and pets
   2. Important papers and documents
   3. Prescriptions and medications
   4. Pictures
   5. Personal computers (and external hard drives)
   6. Plastic credit and debit cards

1. You can also start to mitigate your home’s surroundings by reducing the number of flammable items and brush around your home, moving piles of wood away from your home, and trim branches that overhang your home and remove debris from your gutters.
2. This would be a great time to check in on your home insurance policy. Are you up to date? Does your policy protect your current home value and include wildfire protection?

In Case of Evacuation

If you do find yourself in an evacuation situation, please obey all evacuation orders from officials and follow these steps below as time allows:

1. Shut all your windows and doors and remove flammable shades or curtains. If you have metal shutters, we advise that you close those as well.
2. Move flammable furniture to the center of the room and away from windows and doors.
3. Turn off your home’s gas at the meter and shut off your air conditioning. If you have propane tanks, grills, etc. please turn those off and move the appliances away from structures.
4. Make sure all your emergency supplies are in your vehicle, then locate all pets and take them with you.

Two Opportunities to Meet with Us

There will be two opportunities for you to meet us and talk with us about wildfire safety. The Carbondale Fire District will be hosting a meeting in English and Spanish for our community to come and learn how to prepare themselves and their property for wildfire. Join us on May 19, 2022, at 6:30 at the Carbondale Fire Department (301 Meadowood Dr, Carbondale, CO 81623).

We will also be at the Carbondale City Market on May 15, 2022, from 10:00 am – 1:00pm to talk about wildfire safety and answer any questions.

Pasos Simples que Puede Tomar Hoy para Prepararse para las Amenazas de Incendios Forestales

Alentamos a cualquier persona que viva en un lugar con alto riesgo de incendio forestal a seguir estos pasos:

1. Regístrese para recibir sus alertas locales. Para el Condado de Garfield puedes inscribirse aquí y para el Condado de Pitkin puedes inscribirse aquí.
2. ¡Haz un plan! Lo alentamos a que haga un plan de emergencia para usted y su familia y que se asegure de que todos se sientan cómodos y seguros ejecutándolo. Complete su lista de emergencia determinando primero su ruta de evacuación y preparando un kit de suministros de emergencia. Seguimos las 6 P al crear nuestro kit de emergencia:

2. También puede comenzar a mitigar alrededor de su hogar reduciendo la cantidad de artículos inflamables y maleza, moviendo montones de madera lejos de su hogar y recortando las ramas que sobresalen y eliminando los escombros de sus canaletas.

En Caso de Evacuación

Si se encuentra en una situación de evacuación, obedezca todas las órdenes de evacuación de los oficiales y siga estos pasos a continuación según lo permita el tiempo:

1. Cierre todas sus ventanas y puertas y retire las cortinas o cortinas inflamables. Si tiene persianas metálicas, le aconsejamos que también las cierre.
