Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Summer break is coming to an end and that means school will be back in session soon. We want to remind you of some pertinent information to ensure that everyone will be safe as school starts up again.

Commuting to School

In our community, a lot of folks walk or bike as their main source of transportation, that’s why it’s extremely important to be vigilant while driving and adhere to stop signs around town. If your child walks or bikes to school, here are a few safety tips to remind them of as the school year begins.

1. If there is a sidewalk, please use it. If you are walking down a street that does not have a sidewalk, please make sure that you walk facing the traffic.
2. Take a practice walk with your child to and from school so that they know the route to take. We also recommend planning out additional routes home in case they get lost or something happens where they cannot take their normal route.
3. Before crossing the road, always look both ways and make sure that you use crosswalks whenever they are available.
4. Make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street if possible so you know that they do see you.
5. If you are biking, ride on the right side of the road, with traffic and in a single file.
6. Make sure to wear a helmet and bright colored clothing if possible.
7. Come to a complete stop before crossing the street. If you are in a crosswalk, dismount from your bike and walk across.

If your child takes the school bus, we recommend these safety tips to ensure they have the information they need to make it to school safely.

1. Go to the bus stop they will be getting on and off at and go over proper bus safety with them.
   1. This includes reaming seated at all times, wearing a seatbelt if applicable, and waiting to get off the bus until the bus is fully stopped.
   2. Make sure your children know to wait for the bus to pull away from the stop and then they can cross the street. If they have to cross the street before, let them know that if they can’t see the bus driver, the bus driver can’t see them – so they need to walk farther up to be in their line of sight.
   3. Make sure your children know to stand at least 6 feet away from the curb.

Driving Near Schools in a Pedestrian Friendly Town

It’s always important to drive vigilant and with no distractions, but it’s almost imperative that you drive with full focus in a pedestrian friendly town. As more people take to the streets by walking or biking throughout the day, we encourage you to follow these safety tips while on the road:

• Be aware of school zones and please adhere to the speed limit while you are in them. The slower speeds within school zones may mean that children will be leaving class soon and there will be some pedestrian traffic around.
• Never pass a buss loading or unloading children. If you are unsure about the rules around school buses, we recommend just taking extra caution and stopping until the bus starts moving again.
• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children as they are loading and unloading so, please give them some space.

Seguridad Regresando a la Escuela

¿Pueden creer que es ese tiempo del año otra vez?  Las vacaciones de verano están llegando a su fin y eso significa que la escuela comenzara pronto. Queremos recordarle algunos consejos importantes para asegurarnos que todos estén seguros a medida que la escuela comience de nuevo.

Yendo a la Escuela

En nuestra comunidad, muchas personas caminan o andan en bicicleta como su principal fuente de transporte, es por eso que es extremadamente importante estar atentos mientras conducen y cumplir con las señales de alto alrededor del pueblo. Si su hijo camina o va en bicicleta a la escuela, aquí hay algunos consejos de seguridad para recordarle.

1. Si hay una banqueta, por favor úsela. Si está caminando por una calle que no tiene una banqueta, asegúrese de caminar frente al tráfico.
2. Practique la caminada con su hijo hacia y desde la escuela para que sepa la ruta. También recomendamos planear rutas adicionales a casa en caso de que se pierdan o suceda algo en el que no puedan tomar su ruta normal.
3. Antes de cruzar la carretera, siempre mire en ambos sentidos y asegúrese de usar los cruces peatonales siempre que estén disponibles.
4. Haga contacto visual con los conductores al cruzar la calle si es posible para que sepa que sí lo ven.
5. Si va en bicicleta, conduzca por el lado derecho de la carretera, con tráfico y en una sola fila.
6. Asegúrese de usar siempre un casco y ropa de colores brillantes si es posible.

Si su hijo toma el camión escolar, le recomendamos estos consejos de seguridad para asegurarse de que tenga la información que necesita para llegar a la escuela de manera segura.

1. Vaya a la parada del camión en la que subirá y bajará y repase la seguridad adecuada del camión con ellos.
   1. Esto incluye estar sentado en todo momento, usar el cinturón de seguridad si corresponde y esperar para bajar del camión hasta que el camión esté completamente detenido.
